What is Azelaic acid?

Azelaic acid, the appearance is white to the slightly yellow monoclinic prism, needle crystal or powder. Used as a plasticizer, and used in alkyd resin, paint and chemical synthesis.


A brief description of the production method, it is obtained by oxidizing oleic acid with nitric acid or ozone. It can also be obtained by cracking industrial castor as raw material. Azelaic acid can be prepared by condensing 1,5-dibromopentane with acetonitrile, or by using glutaric acid monomethyl cyanide as raw material and ketone azelaic acid dimethyl ester.

Uses of Azelaic Acid:

1. It is mainly used for the production of dioctyl azelaic acid plasticizer, and can also be used as the raw material for the production of spices, lubricating oils, oils, and polyamide resins.

2. Azelaic acid has antibacterial properties and can be used as food preservative. Use in mouthwash is beneficial to the prevention and treatment of dental caries, and use in soap can avoid cracking on the surface of the soap body. It has good permeability to the skin and can be used in cream cosmetics to increase the absorption function of the skin. Has a variety of medicinal properties and is available in dermatological plaster. Has skin lightening and whitening properties. Azelaic acid or its zinc salt is used in hair care products in combination with vitamin B6, which is suitable for the treatment of male hormonal alopecia with strong endocrine secretion, and at the same time stimulates hair growth.

What are the pharmacological effects of Azelaic acid?

1. Directly inhibit and kill bacteria on the skin surface and in the hair follicles, and eliminate pathogens;

2. Azelaic acid can break the connection between testosterone and the body’s production of oil. This can be helpful for a person going through puberty when hormone changes lead to acne. Competitively inhibit the enzymatic process of producing dihydrotestosterone and reduce excessive skin oil caused by dihydrotestosterone factors;

3. It’s also an antioxidant that can counter the effects of, or neutralize, free radicals. Neutralizing free radicals with azelaic acid can lower inflammation. Inhibit the production and function of active oxygen free radicals, which is beneficial to anti-inflammatory;

4. Acne is made partly by skin cells that don’t shed normally. Dead cells build up, and pimples are the result. Azelaic acid can slow down skin protein production, which can help lower buildup. Reduce the synthesis of filamentous keratin and prevent excessive keratinization of hair follicles;

5. Destroy cell mitochondrial respiration and inhibit cell synthesis, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation.

6. Certain skin cells make pigment when you expose your skin to sunlight. That pigment may show up as dark patches, called hyperpigmentation, on your skin. Azelaic acid can block the process and prevent dark patches from showing up.

How Azelaic Acid Works

How should this medicine be used?

Azelaic acid comes as a gel, foam, and cream to apply to the skin. It is usually applied twice a day, in the morning and the evening. Please use it at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use azelaic acid exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Be careful not to get azelaic acid in your eyes or mouth. If you do get azelaic acid in your eyes, wash with plenty of water and call your doctor if your eyes are irritated.

Azelaic acid foam is flammable. Stay away from open fire, flames, and do not smoke while you are applying the azelaic acid foam, and for a short time afterward.

What should I know about the storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Do not freeze. Dispose of the gel pump and the foam 8 weeks after opening the container.

Azelaic acid foam is flammable, keep it away from flames and extreme heat. Do not puncture or incinerate the azelaic acid foam container.

Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them.
